Books I read in August

August was a really good reading month for me. I finished eight books, and I’d say it was pretty successful overall. I had 1 three star book, four four star books, and three five star books. Read on to learn more about the books and my thoughts on them.

  1. Crank by Ellen Hopkins

Dates read: 08/01/2021-08/02/2021

My Rating: 3/5 stars

This book tells the story of a teenage girl who becomes addicted to crank, a form of methamphetamine. It is told in the form of poems, which is a very interesting take. I liked it.

Please read the trigger warnings for this book before reading, and I’d say this book is probably 15 and up!

2. Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

Dates read: 07/21/2021-08/05/2021

My Rating: 4/5 stars

After losing her job of over six years, Louisa Clark is hired by a wealthy woman and her husband. She is tasked to take care of their quadriplegic son, Will. Lou must figure out how to stay sane, keep making money for her family, and most importantly, not fall in love with the charming, funny, intelligent and sarcastic man who is much more than what meets the eye. This is the trilogy, and I am very excited to read the second and third books.

Please read the trigger warnings, and again, I’d say this one is 15 and up too!

3. Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Dates Read: 08/05/2021-08/07/2021

My Rating: 4/5 stars

Malibu Rising is a story about one unforgettable night in the life of a family: the night they each have to choose what they will keep from the people who made them… and what they will leave behind. The concept was interesting, the story is told over the course of 24 hours, and the ending was not surprising.

Again, read the trigger warning for this one.

4. The Tattooist of Auschwitz

Dates Read: 08/08/2021-08/09/2021

My Rating: 4/5 stars

Heather Morris’s novel opens in the Auschwitz concentration camp during WWII, as a young man named Lale tattoos the number 34902 onto the arm of a young women. As their eyes meet, he is instantly smitten, and he vows to marry her one day. The story follows, Lale, Gita and others who were at Auschwitz. Although the story has had some inaccuracies, I found it interesting, and it prompted me to do more research about life during the war, particularly life for those held in concentration camps.

Please read up on what this book is about before you decide to read it.

5. The Roommate by Rosie Danan

Dates read: 08/08/2021-08/14/2021

My Rating: 5/5 stars

Clara Wheaton has spent her whole life trying to avoid scandals after a series of mishaps with the women of her family before her. She decides it’s time for a fresh start, so she moves from the East Coast to the West Coast to live in LA with her long time friend and crush of 14 years, Everett Bloom. On their way to the apartment, Everett tells Clara he is going on tour and that he has rented out his room. Clara meets Josh, who couldn’t be more different. But as they begin living together, maybe they aren’t as different as they think. I loved this book. It had me laughing out loud one minute and crying the next, it was beautiful.

Please read what this is about before you chose to read this, and I’d say this book is certainly 18 and up.

6. Aphrodite Made Me Do It by Trista Mateer

Dates Read: 08/18/2021-08/18/2021

My Rating: 5/5 stars

This is a collection of poems and art about what it means and what it’s like to be a woman. I really enjoyed it and thought it was beautiful.

7. Anxious People by Fredrik Backman

Dates Read: 08/13/2021-08/26/2021

My Rating: 5/5 stars

Anxious People is an ingeniously constructed story about the enduring power of friendship, forgiveness, and hope—the things that save us, even in the most anxious times. I enjoyed this book so much, and it’s another one that had me both laughing and crying.

Please check the trigger warnings for this one.

8. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Dates Read: 08/13/2021-08/31/2021

My Rating: 4/5 stars

Fangirl tells the story of Cather Avery and her new life in college, including accepting the past, dealing with the present and looking to the future, like welcoming a new romance. I thought this one was very unique, and cute.

This one has trigger warnings, but I’d say they’re not as intense as some of the others.
